The following six points are taken from a sermon by George Whitefield that is often titled “How to listen to a sermon”. For those of you who don’t know, George Whitefield was a preacher in the 1700’s who really became famous as God used him in a series of revivals in what is now known as the “Great Awakening”. So surely he must have preached “good sermons”.
Keys for getting the most out of what the preacher says:

- Come to hear them, not out of curiosity, but from a sincere desire to know and do your duty.
- Give diligent heed to the things that are spoken from the Word of God.
- Do not entertain even the least prejudice against the minister.
- Be careful not to depend too much on a preacher, or think more highly of him than you ought to think.
- Make particular application to your own hearts of everything that is delivered.
- Pray to the Lord, before, during, and after every sermon

Maybe some day I will take these six points and elaborate on them in a sermon of my own. Lord knows how much all of us really need it.
